The basic Fife guiding system consists of a sensor, signal processor, electrohydraulic power unit, and positioning assembly-rugged, precision components designed to handle a demanding job. The sensor (A) monitors the exact position of the moving strip, transmitting a continuous electronic signal through a signal processor (B) to a proportional spool-type servo valve (C). The servo valve is integrated with an electrohydraulic power unit (D) to direct a proportional flow of oil to a hydraulic cylinder (E), which positions the guide (F), providing accurate alignment of the strip. (Fife Intermediate Offsset Pivot Guide is illustrated.) With Fife systems, separate position feedback electronics are not required, except in special applications, which further simplifies installation, operation, and maintenance. Fife offers an electromechanical control system as an option for certain applications. The electromechanical controls delete the hydraulic power unit and use a motor-driven screw actuator. Many factors affect the proper selection of automatic guiding systems. To assure results, it is desirable, and more often necessary, to make an in-plant survey of review engineering drawings of your machinery before recommending the guiding system best suited to your specific requirement.

The proportional servo valve utilizes an electrical torque motor, a double-nozzle pilot stage, and a sliding spool main (second) stage. Electrical current in the electromagnetic torque motor (DC, rotating armature, permanent magnet motor) causes a clockwise or counterclockwise troque of the armature. The torque causes a proportional displacement of the spool in the main (second) stage, resulting in a proportional flow to the load.

- Subplate-mounted valves for multiple guiding systems with single power unit
- External mechanical null adjustment
- Rugged construction with heavy-duty aluminum body
- Completely symmetrical design-has minimum null shift with pressure and temperature   changes
- Reliable double-nozzle pilot stage with internal filtration
- Dry electrical torque motor eliminates pickup of magnetic particles from fluid
- Field serviceable-easily removable pilot valve for spool cleaning
- Fail-safe valve centering blocking all hydraulic flow on loss of electronic signal
- Six spool sizes, from 2.6 to 34.9 gpm (10 to 132l/min) flow
- Valves rated at 1015 psi (70 bars) pressure drop

The signal processor receives the sensor continuous signal and processes all signal changes caused by even the most minute strip motion from the null or balance point. Its amplified DC output drives the power unit servo valve to provide hydraulic flow at the guide device to properly position the strip. The signal processor includes a dynamic compensation circuit which tailors the dynamic behavior of the system to optimize performance. With this compensation-and provided all control loop mechanical elements are sufficiently rigid-the sensor proportional band can be as small as±1/32" (0.8mm).

It's Microprocessor-Based, Automatic, and Upgradeable Fife's CDP-01 features automatic setup of polarity, guide point, and gain. Because it's microprocessor-based, you have th flexibility to add a feature or option as you need it. And, it's rugged enough for the most demanding applications when mounted in a heavy-duty enclosure.

It's easy to install and operate with normal three-button operation. The CDP-01 bar graph shows the actual position of the strip within the proportional band of the sensor. In setup mode, the bar graph shows the gain of the system, guide point, or guide polarity. Other controls are located behind a convenient door.

Because of its digital technology, the CDP-01 is flexible enough for today's toughest applications and versatile enough to communicate with variety of other devices. The CDP-01 provides position controledge, center, or printed line-for:
- Intermediate Guides
- Unwind Systems
- Rewind Systems
- Chasing Applications
Fife's new generation processor can include up to three independent control loops. The system can be controlled by the integral control panel or your PLC or computer. Several additional control modes are available, including automatic lock function for strip tearouts or interrupted lines.

- Automatic setup
- All I/O's are protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD)
- UL-approved power supply components
